£95m costs to be cut - 770 worldwide Jobs Lost - Profits down to £537m
Smith & Nephew, which employs 11,000 people worldwide including 1,200 in the UK, is to save £95m in costs over the next two years by cutting around 770 administrative jobs.

Profits increased to £322,000 - improved product lines
Mediwatch Plc recorded significantly improved pre-tax profits of £322,000 for the year to October 2011 compared with £233,000 in 2010. The company expects to complete a number of projects in 2012 which will strengthen and update its product lines. An improved performance for 2012 and beyond is expected.

Underlying revenues, excluding currency effects and prior year non-core business, were £229.5m, up 11.5 per cent for the three months ending 2 January.

Biomet is to consolidate its UK manufacturing operations by ceasing manufacturing at its facility in Swindon and focussing all UK production at its remaining site in Bridgend, Wales. Manufacturing at Swindon will be reduced in April, 2012 with the loss of 220 employees.

British inhaled-drug specialist Consort Medicals first-half pretax profit rose from £8.2m to £10.2m. Revenue increased by 2% to £71.1m. The companys Bespak units core respiratory business has also seen a strong growth in volume.
