Q4 sales up 8% - growth in emerging markets
Unilever recorded an 8.4% increase in 2012 first-quarter sales, helped by an 11.9% increase in emerging markets. Strong sales of hair, dishwash and bleach goods in Asia and South America helped the company beat forecasts of 6.4% growth. 56% of business comes from emerging markets.

85 Norfolk jobs lost - Management and clerical positions - Difficult trading
Cleaning product manufacturer Jeyes is to cut 85 jobs in Thetford, Norfolk, as part of a major restructuring. Most of the job losses will be management and clerical staff. Cleaning products firm based Jeyes in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk has announced up to 85 job losses, the clerical and management positions could go over the next 12 months. The company employs 350 people across both the Thetford and Cambridge sites.

9% increase in sales to £4.6bn - strong growth in new markets
Cosmetics manufacturer L'Oreal recorded £4.6bn revenue in the quarter to March 2012, a 9.4% increase compared with the previous year. Sales in new markets reached £1.7bn and exceeded sales in Western Europe for the first time. The company has expanded into Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

£6m factory expansion - 80 jobs created - substantial business growth
Lancashire-based Accrol Papers, which manufactures toilet and kitchen rolls, has invested £6m to expand its Blackburn site to 300,000sq ft. Accrol has increased staff headcount from 100 to 180 as a result of the investment. Turnover is expected to increase by up to £15m a year. Year to April 2011: turnover £50m.

Profits warning - sales fall in Nigeria
PZ Cussons Plc has issued its second profit warning in less than four months because of social and economic unrest in Nigeria. The country accounts for up to 40% of PZ Cussons sales but business has been adversely affected by social instability. Trading in other markets, including the UK, achieved expectations. The group is expected to return to profit in 2012.

70 jobs lost - IT staff affected
Unilever Plc has reduced its IT team at centres in and around Merseyside by at least 70. There is speculation that the jobs may be outsourced to India. The affected staff were employed on short-term contracts through agencies. Unilever´s turnover in 2010 was 38.65bn and its operating profit was approximately 5bn.

First half profits up 3% to £540k - international expansion
Toileteries and cosmetics manufacturer Swallowfield recorded a 3.1% increase in pre-tax profits to £540,000 in the six months to January 2012, helped by a 7.8% increase in overseas sales. Revenues increased slightly to £31.5m. The company is continuing to focus on developing its overseas markets.

£124m increase in promotional spend - cautious outlook
Anglo-Dutch company Unilever, the world's second-biggest maker of branded household products by sales, increased its marketing budget by £124m to £5.13bn in 2011. Net profits increased 1% from £3.8bn to £3.83 in 2011 but the company is cautious of the future outlook due to difficult conditions in mature economies.
