Five new appointments - business expansion
Expanding market research company DVL Smith has appointed five new members of staff: Laura Cullimore and Ioannis Kokkotos have been appointed as consultants, Richard Heafield joins as junior analyst in the analytics team and Katerina Angelovska joins as assistant office manager. Kaori Yamamoto, who was previously a qual research executive at Firefish, also joins the London-based company.

Creating 50 jobs - Olympics cause increased demand - contact centre expansion
Scotland-based contact centre operator Journeycall, is recruiting up to 50 more employees to deal with an expected increase in customer calls related to the 2012 Olympics. 200 new jobs - Derby call centre expansion
Call centre operator HEROtsc is recruiting 200 more staff at its Derby contact centre which handles calls for Sky. HEROtsc took over the former Egg call centre in December 2011 and initially planned to recruit 800 people. 200 more jobs will be added in summer 2012 making a total of 1,000 employees at the site.

70 teaching jobs lost - 2 schools closing - Building Schools for the Future programme
Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council is making 70 teaching staff redundant due to the closure of two Blackburn schools - Beardwood Humanities College and Crosshill School. Pupils will move to the new Blackburn Central High School under the Building Schools for the Future, BSF, scheme.

Options being considered include investing in new equipment and out-sourcing some of the work. Both options could lead to job losses from a team of 40. Site for new hospital identified - 20m capital investment - employment opportunities
Northumbria Healthcare Trust is to build a 20m hospital at the Berwick Academy site, potentially creating new jobs. It will launch a 12-month consultation process followed by a six-month tender process. The hospital could be completed by summer 2015.
